Home made pre oiler
Her are some pictures of our engine pre-oiler. We used this prior to starting our newly overhauled engine.

What is the purpose of a pre oiler? Steve

Re: Home made pre oiler
It "pre-pressurizes" the engine oil system prior to initial start-up after rebuild/repair. That way, the first time it starts, the oil pump and galleries should already be filled with oil and all bearings, bushings, etc. should already have oil on them.krines wrote:What is the purpose of a pre oiler? Many folks assemble using assembly grease (such as Lubriplate) to fill the oil pump (to prime it) and to give the grease-smeared bearings/bushings/gears lubrication until the oil pump gets oil to it all.
Personally, I always dip pistons with their rings into fresh engine oil before sliding the cylinder onto them as well.

How does one accomplish the task of pre oiling with this device? Steve

Re: Home made pre oiler
One way is to connect it up to the oil pressure port and pump the engine full, the object being to fill all the oil lines, galleys, lifters, etc., so that oil will start flowing with the start of cranking rather than waiting for everything to fill up by running the relatively dry engine. Oftentimes the engine will be pre oiled then rotated, by using the starter with the spark plugs removed, until oil pressure shows on the O.P. gage, thus cushioning the bearings and journals for the initial engine start.

We would be willing to lend the per-oiler to any club member. You would have to supply your own drill to drive the pump. It worked great! Thanks Lars.

LARS
Would you be willing to share a sketch drawing and parts list to allow others to build their own unit?
Your offer is so generous, but loaning tools has a raft of potential problems.
