O-300 Recommended Overhaul Shops?
Well, as a continuation of my previous thread regarding the Mag failure, we pulled the accessory case apart and could not find the missing gear tooth. What we found was a TON of fine metal shavings all over the place....looks like the tooth got pulverized and now I'm looking for recommendations on overhaul shops to pull the engine apart and at least clean it up and inspect the innerds.
Any recommendations? Any ideas on what this could cost me?
I am home in Virginia now, but the airplane is stuck with an A&P IA friend in Texas (MWL).

Just in Tulsa and visited several o'Haul shops, I was impressed with Custom AirMotive, Staff has been there for many years, Water break Dyno to run engines on, Mark 9188366836

I'm planning on having my engine overhauled at Zephyr aircraft engines in Florida. They continuously win aviation consumer top shop and are highly regarded on the AOPA and Pilots of America forum.
Charlie Melot is the owner.

I'm not affiliated in any way but have done some homework and spoken with them and have planned to use them when the time comes.

I see you are in Norfolk. At Winchester Airport is a Aero Engines of Winchester. I have not dealt with them but from those that have I have heard good reports. The advantage is you could deliver the engine. Have a little more control over it.

Thanks Ash.....looks like I may still be in business. I found a low time O-300 available within driving distance that has everything I need (prop and mags). The 6-bolt is good to have IF you ever have to replace it - more available, but you can get the the same prop for the 8-bolt.Aryana wrote:Great news! Not exactly the same prop... With the crude instrumentation of these airplanes (coupled with the fact you likely had no practical "control" with which to compare... I'm not surprised you couldn't detect any difference.
The engine noticed a difference, however. Less mass to swing is easier on your engine. The thinner blades made a difference in weight. (Try swinging a couple pounds of aluminum placed 2-feet out on a stick around at 2500 RPM and see how it feels. IF you don't have a torn rotator-cuff previously...you soon will.)

I kind of thought that was implied since we were talking about the two different cranks. I was only referring to the parts that stick out from behind the spinner.gahorn wrote:
