Has anyone replaced their pedals with late model 172 pedals

Post by piclr60 »

I have been through the list of submitted 337's looking for anyone who has replaced their rudder pedals with late model 172 rudder pedals. Unless I have missed one I can only see one that used 185 rudder pedals.

I am trying to acquire some information so I may fix some paperwork problems on a 170 that had replaced the rudder pedals with 172 pedals and had no documentation to the fact. If anyone has information that they are willing to give me I would be very grateful. I just started the process and want to find out what parts and how many have to be replaced just to mount the pedals. I believe the pedals are from about 1980 but even that is still being determined.

Thank you,

Brad

If you order a set of rudder pedals you will probably get the new type moulded plastic pedals. I would guess that it would then just be a log book entry for installation of a Cessna part.
In my airplane, I replaced the sheet metal pedals that had worn out bushings with salvaged cast plastic ones. They never seem to show any bushing wear.
I just considered those fellows in OKC were very busy and did not want to bother them so I just made a log book entry.
Please understand that I'm not advocating my methods for other people but in view of the apparent back breaking work load of the friendly FUZZ on OKC, I kind of took pity on them.
I sort of did the same thing when I put the Continental IO-360 engine in my airplane.

Thanks for the reply.
When you say order new pedals do you order a direct replacement based on the same original part number? Sorry for the lack of knowledge- new to aircraft ownwership and the balancing act of parts for a 60 year old airplane.

Thanks

Brad, I will be curious to see what other folks will say in response to your inquiry. I had an opportunity to acquire a set of the cast aluminum rudder pedals many years ago. If I remember correctly they came from a C-150 or C-152 (might have been a newer 172), I just don't remember. The exchange took a short amount of time as it was just a matter of undoing the old factory originals, which were identical to the 170 rudder pedals, and putting the cast ones on in their place. Mine have worked perfectly for many years and I just donated my original ones to the 170 auction in Longmont, CO this past summer. Unfortunately I have no paperwork to support the change. Maybe when the issue has been settled here I will proceed to do whatever may be legal. No IA has ever questioned the more modern ones in all the annual inspections and other work I have had done to the plane. But then, non have questioned or suggested I make sure I have all of the required data decals (such as baggage limitation, etc.) installed and I was told as recently as this morning that A&P's/IA's are supposed to check to see those items are installed in their proper locations at each annual. I personally don't know if this is true, but it was an IA who mentioned it to me this AM.

Probably the first thing would be to find out what you're going to get if you order a new set of pedals. If they're going to be the current type, which I believe are the plastic ones, go from there. Do not buy new ones. Get a set from a salvage yard. Like I said, the plastic, or if you prefer, composite pedals never seem to wear out.
The cast aluminum pedals were used between the time of the sheet metal and plastic pedals, but I found that most of them in the salvage yards needed to be rebushed too.

I agree with blueldr on this one. I have installed plastic ones with just a log book entry. I at that time did ask if a 337 was needed and the PMI at the time did not think so. You for sure are not going to get the original ones if you order them from Cessna. At the time I ordered the pedals they were 25.00 a set but I was told they have increased the price substantially. They probably forgot to add a "0" at the time I bought them.

Yes you do need to check for all required placards on the annual and they are listed in the TCDS which also lists a lot of other information that needs to be verified at annual.

Actually it looks like p/n 0310453 is still a valid number for the rudder pedals, it is the superseded number for the rudder pedals on the 120/140/170/170A. Only $859 each from Premier Aviation. 8O

850.00 :? 8O wow. You're so scary your mom named you Gary  Just kidding since you are named Gary. My wife uses another word for why my mom named me Joel and what it rhymes with... anyway, I have made the holes on original pedals that were worn round again with a reamer and then had the local machine shop manufacture on his lathe some of that bomb proof composite stuff that uses alphabet letters. They have a lip and are a press fit. It cost me a whole 12 pack of long neck buds for a variety of sizes as he just kept making several when I only needed a few. Easy to install and I just did a log entry for the repair. This was before the 25.00 plastic pedals from Cessna. I was jsut kidding about the 0 being forgotten. sounds like 250.00 would be a screaming deal.

So.... for how much will your friend make a bunch of bushings?
I'll bet a number of our members might need some. (and a set donated for this summer's auction in Bardstown would be enjoyed, too!)

That was over 10 years ago and unfortunately he has developed MS which affected his eyes. The other problem is that depending on how worn they are, you need to ream them to a standard size or, a metric size and then make the size you need. It is possible to manufacture some bushings for some pretty oblong shaped holes.

Any good machine shop can do this in very little time in the guy is any good with a lathe. I imagine any gun shop with a lathe can as well.

McFarlane Aviation will take the cast rudder pedals as cores and give you rebushed ones in exchange. There are limitations though on how "wallered out" the holes are on the cores. Here's what they say:

Exchange your pedals before they are worn beyond repairable limits!
You may send us your used rudder pedal cores at any time for core credit consideration. The following guidelines will be used to determine core value:

Max large pivot hole diameter < 0.490 inches
Max small brake pivot hole diameter < 0.275 inches
Pedals worn beyond these limits are not eligible for core credit.
Always check the hole size at the point of maximum diameter. The inside face of the magnesium casting around the hole may have wear over a much larger area than the diameter of the hole due to pedal action. This face wear, if minor, may be ignored when measuring the hole diameter.

Some common sense is in order as to how large one should ream the C-170 stamped rudder pedal holes in order to put in bushings. Maybe getting aluminum bushings welded in place and then pressing composite/plastic/nylon bushings inside of them might be the way to go if the holes are larger than 0.490"? If I was to do this I would make the bushings as long as possible to provide more surface area.

You could do that and also then cut a groove n to take a locking ring or wire or snap ring to prevent it from twisting in the pedal. That might not happen but making it long and locking it on one side and the "hat" brim when you push it in will prevent that.

Gary,
Re: welding bushings into the stock pedals, are the stock pedals made of a weldable alloy?
