Tail wheel tie down bolt PN0642105 Air Repair

Post by johnbhco »

Just got the bolt from Air Repair and it is smaller than the hole in the Scott tailwheel. Is this normal and if so, how do you bush it out to fit? John Arsenault

Is the Eye bolt from Air Repair 7/16 diameter?

I gave it to my mechanic with other parts and did not measure it. Everything I read said it's the right part #. What should the measurement be?

It should be a 7/16 bolt and I imagine it is but your tail wheel is missing the steel sleeve perhaps.

I recently purchased P/N 642105 (tail wheel tie-down eye bolt) for my '48 C-170 (Scott 3200) and it was way too long. Does anyone know if there's a different part number for my application? Thx.

No, there is one eye bolt part which was made for the L-19 which happens to use the same tail wheel (Scott 3200) and basic main spring as our 170s. Substitution of this part for the standard AN7 bolt makes a convenient method for mooring the tail.

As all 3200 tail wheels have the same thickness attaching bracket, the spacer that is suppose to be used with the 3200 is also the same thickness and the spring, even if you have the thin version, is not that different in thickness, that this bolt should be way to long.

Likely the eyebolt is the correct length, more likely something else in your setup is not right if you can't use this bolt with say two washers under the nut. Pictures are worth a thousand words here. We might easily spot the problem if we saw one or two.

Bruce hit the bolt on the head.... .... it takes a couple of extra washers to accomodate the L-19 bolt...otherwise the nut will bottom out on the shank of the bolt and the nut will not properly torque-down against the tailwheel and springs. Take a close look and you will see that it will work just fine with an extra washer or two under the nut.

Here is the tie down bolt set up on my tailwheel.
Note the spacer between the tailwheel and spring.
I do have a washer on the other side of the bolt as well, totaling two washers but there was plenty of thread left in my case.

Things to note:

1. The lower U bracket on the spring pack is very important. It keeps your chains from getting snagged and wrenching your steering arm (ask me how I know)
2. Be sure to use a STEEL locknut. The nylocks have been known to loosen up over time.

Turns out to have been an occipital delusion. With an extra washer P/N 0642105 fit just fine. Thanks for the input.
