Push to talk ideas

Post by b17pilot20 »

We are modifying our panel on a Cessna 170B. As part of the modification, we are installing a new nav/com. This nav/com is located under the yoke tube. We are looking for ideas on how and where to place a push to talk switch on the yoke. We have a wire in our harness for the PPT, but are wondering if anyone has done a hard installation vs. a curly cord and a velcro PPT.

Here is my installation that did not modify the yoke at all and includes no velcro. Just a piece of aluminum with a hole drilled in it and bent 90°, attached with an Adel clamp. Actually there are two clamps: One to hold the wire coil to prevent breakage at the switch from flexing, and the other to clamp around the yoke tube.

What is it you object to? The coil cord, the velco button, or both?

I've seen one installation where they drilled the chrome shaft and routed the PTT wire internally.
The PTT button was mounted nicely on the yoke with an aluminum bracket that was covered up with a thin leather wrap.

I've also seen the yoke drilled dead center on the shaft and the button mounted there.

It looks very very nice but your approval may vary.

If I was to do it, I'd just velcro the button on with the coiled wire and call it even.
Finding the perfect PTT location is an over rated endeavor as you'll get used to wherever it is after a few hours of flying.

The issue is the curly cord being in front of the nav/com that is mounted directly below the yoke tube. I think we have found a solution however.
