Hello Paul,

Paul-
Are your gear legs still in good condition or have they failed in some way? The 170 gear by design is soft compared with 180/185 gear if that is what you are comparing them to. There are shops in the USA that can recondition your gear up to re-heat treating if you think they have been molested in the past.
If you are wanting to upgrade to stiffer gear, TIC170A owns an STC to convert the C-170 to C-180 gear. 180 gear are about 3" taller but much stiffer if that is what you are looking for. C-180 gear are probably easier to find as well. New 180 gear can still be purchased from Cessna but not cheap.

If you're seriously thinking about installing C-180 gear legs, please be advised that there three different series of them. The first type, or originals, were so called "Straight" legs. The second series were tweaked at the upper end bend to move the axle center line forward about 3 3/4 inches when installed. These were the series I used when I installed the heavier IO-360 engine and CS prop. The third series was, I believe, slightly heavier and common with the C-185 aircraft. They will all bolt right in to the C-170 gear box. You might have to thin down the locking wedges to get them in.

I believe Paul and I were talking about Lady Legs, late '53 and beyond.

Agreed. But if you can't find a set of "Lady Legs" and may want to revert to C-180 legs------???

We still don't know if there is anything wrong with his gear. He was just complaining about them being soft not defective. They are all soft, that's why I mentioned the 180 gear.

I'm on the hunt for some "Lady Legs" as Paul is, they are a good "in-between" the soft originals and the 180 legs.
