Your go to bar?
If you could only have one bucking bar, what would be the shape?
Of course, in tungsten do folks have a bar shape that they reach for 90% of the time?

The one I pick up 99% of the time on my RV-7 project is pretty much identical to this one on amazon.com. It's 5/8" x 1" x 4", weighs about a pound and a half, and there are very few places it won't go. I like the 15-degree angled face on one end, which allows the bar to fit all the way into the leading edge of the RV wing and still get a square shot at the buck tail.

Having built four Van's RV type aircraft, approximately 90 percent of the time these were used. The smaller one is made of tungsten and costs about 100 bucks. The other one I bought used from "The Yard" in Wichita, KS for about 5 bucks. They both buck quite well.bagarre wrote:If you could only have one bucking bar, what would be the shape?

Ed,
Is there some technique that you use when bucking rivets that the tape on the bars helps with?

Re: Your go to bar?
It's just a good practice to tape up the bar to protect the aluminum around where you are riveting. It also makes it easier to grasp the bar...you don't want to drop it and dent something that would not look good with a dent in it. If your riveting in an area where you suspect dropping would cause damage , always protect the area with cardboard, small pillow or something similar. Here is a pix of the assortment I have used. Oops both pix the same.johneeb wrote:Ed,

I had a different idea in mind when I read the post topic. This makes more sense, however.

Yeah, my first thought for a response was Brewery Becker here in Brighton, MI, but this IS an airplane forum...Ryan Smith wrote:I had a different idea in mind when I read the post topic. This makes more sense, however.

Tungsten has its uses, however don't ever drop it in a hard to get to area. It cannot be retrieved with a magnet like steel ones can. Occasionally one does drop a bar
It's not done till it's overdone
