55' 170B nose bowl and exhaust

Post by kylegreen229 »

Saw a photo of a really nice clean 55' 170B where the exhaust didn't come through the front and the cowl looked like it would if you had the O-360 nose bowl but it still had the O-300. Anyway, couldn't tell if I was seeing things or if there is a way to give it this style of cowl and exhaust without having the larger O-360?

A lot of stock engined C-170 airplanes have an aftermarket exhaust system that exits out through the bottom rear cowling air gap. TIC170A, I believe, has or knows where to get, the STC for this exhaust made by one of the members.

Pat Bartone manufactures those exhaust extensions, or used to. TIC170A co-founder John Benham also manufactured similar before he passed. I know John didn't offer his as an STC, and I believe Pat is no longer providing them as an STC installation, but will sell them to you for installation on a 337. Pat is in Connecticut, and his information should be in the 2015 membership directory.

They are very nice...they're on my short list for additions to my airplane.

I bought a pair of Pat Bartone about 18 months ago. Love them.

Bootlegger that I am, if I wanted that exhaust, I'd get one, install it, and forget it. If anyone asked id just say it had always been there.

I will check out this exhaust. I am very interested in cleaning up that lower cowl while putting this airplane together.

By the way, I saw the thread about how to upload photos but I do not have the attach button to do so, just the "Img" button top of the post here. Can't quite figure out how to attach a photo.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I have had Pat Bartone's exhaust pipes on my airplane since prior to 1999 and have been well pleased with them.

Here is a photo of the said airplane mentioned in above posts. It appears to only have exhaust coming out of one side of the cowl in the rear.

One pipe is missing, the other is hanging to low or what we think is an exhaust pipe we see, is not.

Below is a photo of John D. Benham's pipes on my fresh overhaul back in 2006. John is now deceased and his pipes are no longer available.

Pat Bartone, a TIC170A member in Connecticut sells an STC'd set of pipes along the same line, only with a more pleasing (to me, at least) curve in them.

Are you sure Pat sells them with an STC. He didn't last I checked but that has been a few years.

Bruce, I just ordered a set and verified with Pat personally that he now has an STC.

You won't regret putting the Bartone exhausts on your plane. I have had mine for over 15 yrs and am very satisfied.
