Pitot heat for 170A?

I have a 1949 Cessna 170A. Looking to see if anyone has a way or recommendation for adding pitot heat to a certified 170A. Looking to make a nice little soft IFR bird. Also any additional recommendations for IFR equipment I’m definitely curious. Thanks in advance.

When you join the Association, you’ll have access to the Document Library which has some info on this.

Very common to add the later common Cessna L shaped heated pitot. Our TIC170A members library has 337s. I don't know but wouldn't doubt Cessna may have a SB to add it to the early 172. You should probably have a 35 amp generator minimum to make it practical to use, maybe even to get past the electrical load requirement on installation.

A heated pitot is not a requirement for IFR BTW.

Thank you! I appreciate the info. I went ahead and joined. I currently have a Jasco alternator in it that i think will do the trick but I’ll double check. I’ve picked up ice a lot at well below the reported freezing level a fair amount in my local area so I would rather it for practical use.

I’d also recommend adding a sump to the pitot static line. See SK175-8

The ORIGINAL (Cessna approved) heated pitot for the 170 was the Kollsman 518B-01 (aka “sharkfin”) such as is often found on C190s and C195s.

Here’s the Cessna Instructions in the MX Library:

I’m trying to click on these links to see what heated pitot tube I need for my 1950 cessna 170A or if I need a drill approval but when I click on the blue highlighted areas it says I’m. It authorized to do so where can I go to find the pitot tube I need or do I need a stc or a field approval.

Just like the OP, it does not appear you are a TIC170A member. So you do not have privileges to follow the links to the material for your answer. You can join TIC170A here: https://cessna170.org/register/ Once you join, send the webmaster a message requesting your forum privileges be upgraded: webmaster@cessna170.org

The answer to your question is there is no STC that I'm aware of. This leaves you finding parts and getting a field approval OR you could follow the approved Cessna Service Instruction which we have in our technical library which was linked above. AK175-23D
