Has anyone ever heard of or seen anybody put EDO 2870 floats on a 170? I was just curious.

There was one in Brainerd, MN on EDO 2440s for sale a few years back.

2870s would be awfully heavy for a stock powered C-170, buy might work out pretty well with a Continental IO-360 conversion. The C-170 and the C-180 airframes are close enough alike that I believe the mounting struts and other attaching gear would work. Of course the FUZZ would probably have a hard time with it.,

To the best of my knowledge , Edo 2440 floats are only approved for the 170B converted to 220 hp Franklin . They are modified Military Bird dog floats . Bigger floats sound good , but over-coming the weight and drag takes more horsepower than 220. Andrew

There are reasons why the seaplane is limited to 2106 lbs gross wt.

2000 x 2/1.8 = 2222 Lbs. Therefore, the reserve buoyancy with Edo 2000s should handle the gross weight of 2200 Lbs. But, I recall it's the Edo 2000s that limit the gross weight allowable of 2106 Lbs., the same as the Aeronca Sedan on 2000s, not the 145hp Continental.[/i]

I'm looking to find anyone who has had or knows of someone who had a 170 with 2440 floats on it. I have a 170B with a IO 360 and looking to put bigger floats on it. It would be nice to find someone had a one time field approval. TKS Wally
