See below. It is just aft and below the nose of the engine on the L side. Visible thru the cowl inlets when the cowl is on.
It leaks just a tiny bit of oil - consistent thru the time I have owned the airplane. What is it for? It is safety wired in one position.
According to the parts manual, it is for hydraulic propeller control - didn't know that was an option with this engine... ? (I know not on the 170, but I didn't know the C-145 had the option).

If I remember correctly that was for the McCauley two position propeller. Low pitch for take off and then a cruise position also. About a year or so ago we sent one up to Werner Prop in Tucson for consignment sale.
According to the TCDS it is approved on the 170A&B with the C145-2H engine. Prop is the McCauley 2B36C7 with 78K-2 blades Brian
Was the two position prop designed to be adjusted in the field? Looks like it might be hard to do - and - must the control be safety wired after each move? Seems to me a good idea - if I could change prop orientation in the field - say on a grass strip high DA for the climb out - and then readjust the prop for the trip home. Otherwise, why not just change props?
The 2 position prop is adjusted with a cable. We recently had a picture of one of these, the only one many long time TIC170A members have ever seen, posted here at the forum. The pictures where taken at Petit Jean 2005.
Oddly enough the C-145-2H is also required for the Koppers Aeromatic propellor even though the control itself would not be used for this propellor installation.

Shame those things have mostly gone the way of the dinosaur, seems like a low cost/low weight alternative to the constant speed prop that most of us don't have.

I have one of these on my 0300-B. Wish I had a new McCauley two position prop to go with it I have had a slight leak at one time or another. Nothing to be concerned about. I have seen other "B" engines where the item was removed and a piece of metal the same size as the boss was placed over the area and it stopped all leaks. Member David Bengtson of Van Alstyne, TX has a cherry '56 170-B with the 0300-B engine & the only two posiition McCauley that I have ever seen. Really sharp looking.
