MT Prop

Post by dwwright »

Is there any suggestions from owners that have the 180 HP/CS conversion in the 170B that are using the MT prop? I presently have the Hartzell 74" prop and need to have the hub AD complied with and am looking at the difference between the Hartzell Topprop 80" or going with the MT prop. I would appreciate any comments or an email that I could respond to.

I've had a couple MT props on my Aerobatic aircraft (Sukhoi and Laser) and have had some expensive AD's as well. The downside of the MT is some of the repairs could only be done at the factory in Germany. The Lag Bolt repairs (and shipping) were not cheap and the 6 weeks with no prop wasn’t nice. Make sure you ask a lot of questions about service and repair before you buy one. MT makes a great prop if you need something really light with low inertia. I think I’m going to stick with Metal prop that can be serviced anywhere for my 170.

Go with the 80" hartzell. I spoke to Brian Sutton who has some STCs for putting constant speed props on 180HP super cubs. I sat in a jumpseat from San Juan to Miami and all we talked about was what prop to put on the 360. The MT is not a bad prop but according to him the hartzell pulls better. He sells more MT's because the supercub guys are all weight weinies and don't want to carry the extra 20-30 lbs. If I had the coin I'd be all over it.
