2450 GW increase + 210 HP

Post by alaskan99669 »

I got an interesting e-mail from Dave Stoots who works out of Fairbanks. Check out the e-mail below:

Corey,
Just thought you would like to know about the New STC for the IO-360 210hp and 200hp Lycomings for the Cessna 170A, B models. Will be trying for a GW increase up to 2450lbs on all my Lycoming engine installations for the C-170.
Final FAA approval due Jan 2010 for both engines.

If you go to http://www.stootsaviation.com you can see the new installation of the IO-360M1B 180hp on a '53 C-170B. This engine has the cold air induction sump for more power. This 180hp engine is proving to be a higher performer than the O-360 carb engine. No carb ice, better fuel burn and more power. Test flights have shown TAS @150mph @ 6000ft @ 65% power. I will be posting pictures of the 200hp installation soon.

Also new to the STC will be the MT props, both the 200cm and 210cm models.

Next project will be the New IO-390 210hp Lycoming engine. This engine has proven to be a great performer with more power and the same fuel burn as the 200hp angle valve engine and it weights the same. IO-390 has MT prop approvals also. My C-175 in test flights has shown 155mph @ 6500ft @ 65% power with 9gph burn.

Thanks
Dave Stoots

Wow. Thank you for the info.
What a coincidence. I just received info for his 180 hp upgrade on Jan 18. I asked him for specifics on who supplies what, who installs what, and general costs.
Dave seems to be an honest fellow doing good work for justifiable prices. I worked at Eielson again this summer and learned a little more from folks up there - mainly on who does what with or to planes.
I have read the higher hp engine pricing (general prices) from this site and knew offhand the decision to be made. Upgrade engine for this much money, vs. upgrade to a Cessna 180 for the same money (plus selling the 170). But when I saw the prices and compared current pricing for a 180, it is a very close decision. It’s not gonna be an easy one either, mainly because I do enjoy my 170. But there has been two mooses and a bazillion caribou in spots I’m not ready to land near (actually it’s the takeoff with more weight that dictates a landing elsewhere).
Luckily, we are busy for awhile and the 145 hp engine does a fine job for my purposes now, so I can procrastinate the decision for another year.
I guess I will read the GW increase benefits during this period of delay also. One question that will get answered soon; must you have the GW increase with the larger 200 and 210 hp engines?
Thanks again
Dwayne
