To much squlech

Post by frainiea »

At the crack of dawn I departed for the three hour flight to the 170 fly in at Mineral Wells. With a dutifly filed flight plan and not a cloud in the whole State of Texas I could not have ask more a more pleasant flight. Climbing out of our non-towered airport I soon realized that it was just a little to peaceful. RADIO SILANCE. Own my previous flight I noted that the Comm would not squelch out. The constant buzz was a real headache maker. So when I got on the ground I had adjusted the squelch using the local ATIS. My com has a small recessed set screw to adjust this and it has not been touched in years. It is really not possible to adjust it bumping around in the air. To get to the point I had set it so that nothing would trip the threshold except a strong local signal.

A couple of months ago I flew into a towered airport and had a problem in that I could not hear the ground controller. Now I am wondering if that was a related problem.

After returning to home base I played with it some and discovered that the band between no squelch and being able to hear any thing such as Houston Approach or for that matter another aircraft was non existent. I have a choice of no sound or constant sound.

I figure it is a radio problem. My hanger neighbor thinks it might be a connection problem at the base of the antenna. I replaced the antenna about 2 years ago. Before I work on getting to the connections I thought it would be worth while to get some feed back from the forum.

The radio is a TKM slide in for the original Narco.

Problem solved!!! there was an oily residue in and on the antenna connection. I have no idea where it came from but a little isopropanol cleaned up and the problem went away.
