Door latch repair (Catch PN 0411552 Split topic)

Post by KAP54 »

The latch on my '48 is broken. Specifically, it is the "catch", figure 30-34, part # 0411552, 1948 Parts catalog pages 54-55, that I need to replace. Most of the old posts on this topic are several years old, and I was wondering if there is still a source for this part. It appears to be made out of phenolic material, and broke out around the pivot pin hole.

Thanks

Kieth,,, some of those were phenolic, and some were metal. I am on a trip, but I think I have a metal one you can have. I'll be home next Thur if you don't find a replacement by then.

Well folks, George has finally admitted it. He is on a TRIP! Some of us, probably most, had a pretty good idea that George was on some kind of a TRIP, we just didn't know what kind

I just had the same part break on my passenger door. Does anyone have any aluminum ones laying around?
I have been searching and hope someone has found some. Please let me know ASAP. It's hard to fly holding
the passenger door shut. :-)

Greg,
If you relly need it, I have half a roll of "Duck" tape you can have.

Have you thought at all about modifying the door and installing the later Cessna door latch system out of a C-150 or a C-172 ? Seems to me our previous club maintenance coordinator had an STC or something and I thought the club had it now. Check with "Gahorn" on that if you're interested in it.

Our Co-Founder the late John Benham had an STC to do this and as far as I know it is owned by his estate and not available.

I have one of John's STC'd door latches on my 172 and it is far superior to the original factory door latch.

I know about the STC and would like to find the latches at some point, but I'm just trying to fix the problem at hand so I can keep flying and keep looking for the other parts.

The "previous club maintenance coordinator" (Tom Hall) was not the person with that STC. It was John D., and I believe Dorothy already sold-out/cleaned-out that hangar and that stuff is gone. I believe Jim Wildharber was the diligent gent who talked her out of it for TIC170A.
In any case, it's a darned good mod to have.

Sorry George, when I visited with John and reviewed the option of transferring paperwork to the 170 Assoc., he was not ready to take that step. So, I don't know what has happened to all of John D's 170 paperwork.

Willie Langholz has a good inside connection with Dorothy Benham, maybe he can ask her about donating them to the club if they weren't sold at the estate sale.
