Panel Repaint

Post by 4-Shipp »

Time to finally repaint the instrument panel in 9CP. Sometime in the last few years we discussed the availability of the plexiglass overlays for the subpanel. I figure it was on the old yahoo site as I had negative search results here. Any of you have any info/sources for this piece? Thanks.

Mine was reverse-engineered. The plexi panel was given to a local engraver who reverse-engraved it on the backside. The placards were then filled in with model aircraft paint and the excess wiped off. It looks just like Cessna built it last week. (See one of my early panel photo's at http:www.c170pics.org/ ) The username is C170 and the password is Member (case sensitive).

Joy Warren of the cessna 120/140 Club sells panel overlays for the 1947 & 48 140 & 140A,both original & customized. Originals are $40,custom are $55 as of about a year & a half ago.She advertises in the 120/140 Club newsletter, so I guess it's kosher to post her phone number---248-698-3431. I had her email address at one time but of course I can't find it now. You might check out their club's website ( http://www.cessna120-140.org ),there might be more info there?
My ragwing has plexiglass panel overlays installed about 4 owners ago, back in 1989. The panels were fabricated by SpectraLux Corp,12840 NE 21st Place,Bellevue WA 98005 ( 206-823-6857 ??). The panels are pretty much duplicates of the stock 1948-52 panel overlays, but with instrument holes laid out to order. Plus internal lighting that shines out around the instruments, and thru the tailnumber, switch markings, etc etched into the face of the panel. It is actually a hollowed out piece of plexiglas with a printed circuit board & a bunch of itty-bitty light bulbs inside of it,with another piece of plex mounted on the back closing in all the lights, etc. I'm sure it got a bunch to have it made,it's pretty nice & not as heavy as it sounds. This was a field approval mod, there's a pretty comprehensive & professional looking 337 in the files.
If you contact Spectra Lux,I'm curious as to what kind of prices they quote you. So please post that info if you talk to them.

Joy Warren is definitely the person to talk to if you want a new plexi-panel. She'll even do custom lettering for you. I ordered one about 1 1/2 years ago complete with cusotm lettering for Pitot Heat and anti-collision lights. Very nice work.

Eric,
I'm just looking for the small plexi panel on the lower sub panel (throttle, switches, etc). Ar ewe talking about the same or do you have a plexi overlay for the upper panel (instruemnts section)? Thanks. Is Joy the source for the smaller subpanel?

My overlay is in four sections: upper panel (instruments),lower panel (carb heat, etc plus piano-key switches),and two side panels adjacent to the glove box(es).
I don't know exactly what Joy provides, but from what Doug sez it sounds very nice. Give her a call, you can't beat the prices!

Bruce,
Sounds like you may own a '53-56 170? The plexi panel Eric refers to (I believe) is for his '48 which is the same basic configuration on the '48-'52 170s and also on the later 140s & 140As - in the lower center of the panel and holds the throttle, and all the control for carb heat, mixtute, cabin heat, etc. along with the piano key switches. Since the 170 panel layout changed in '53, you probably have a different plexipanel(?).

Definitely contact Joy and see what she can do. I thought I'd seen one for a later 'B model that she'd done, but I can't be sure. If she's not set up to produce those, perhaps you could send her yours and she could replicate it? I'm shootin' from the hip here, but I think she could do it.

Does anyone have ony pictures they can send me of their plexi panels? I am looking to redo mine this winter and this sounds like an interesting idea.

Knobs

Post by 4-Shipp »

Next challenge in the panel project...KNOBS!

9CP (53B) has 3 different colors of panel knobs: the top row is light grey, the botom row is white and the throttle knob is a bit reddish.

Are new knobs available? Can they be painted, dyed, or recolored in any way?

Much thanks,

Bruce

Dupont Imron paint applies very nicely, looks correct, and comes in the correct colors. (Mine are gull grey, same as Cessna produced in '53.)
