RG battery

I e-mailed Concorde about Skip Koss' comment in the Sept. issue of AOPA that aircraft with under 50 amp generators should use flooded cell batteries rather than RG batteries. Here is his response: "I was miss-quoted in Steve Ells September 2006 AOPA PILOT article What I said or meant was that I...

RG Batteries

In other words, ... my next battery will likely be a RG (recombinant gas) or gel-cell, for no other reason than to protect my expensive battery box. I'm thinking it's probably a lot cheaper to buy a battery with less longevity and add years to my battery box. George, if you switch to an RG battery ...

rudder return springs

Thomas,
Your guess is correct. The left rudder bar--the forward one-uses the "right return spring", p/n 0310196-3. This is mounted to the right side of the tunnel. Hope this left you with the right understanding!

Doug, Thanks for the quick reply. The last picture was especially helpful. It appears that your installation differed from the IPC. The brace in the picture attaches to the outboard tab on the panel whereas the IPC shows that it attaches to the inboard set of tabs. Edit: I think the brace attaches t...

Instrument panel support attachment

I have a '52 C-170B. It is missing both instrument panel braces that tie the stationary instrument panel to the firewall. (These can be seen on pg. 36 of the IPC -- fig. 19-50, p/n 0513000-6). Could someone describe them? Are they 1/2" "U" channels? angles? Where do they attach at the...

dampened crankshafts

(Does this thread help indicate the importance of proper records during engine rebuilds?) The AI that did the overhaul on my O-300 only wrote "New Crankshaft" in the logbook without any supporting data or tags. Shortly after I bought the plane he had his certificate pulled by the FAA. Thi...

Steve,
You might have better luck asking for a copy of this Pilot's Operating Manual at the Cessna Pilot's Association. (http://www.cessna.org)

C-175 tanks

George, Tanks  for the response! I really like idea of extending the range with the C-175 tanks rather than using the Flint tanks or the aux. baggage tank. The Flint tanks are expensive ($4300) and, I imagine, reduce the roll rate/aileron effectiveness. The aux. baggage tank are hard to find a...

c-175 tanks

In looking at the TCDS for the C-175 it looks like one has to carry around a lot of unusable fuel -- anywhere from 54 to 63 lbs depending on the model. This seems like a high penalty for the additional 5 or 6 gals. of fuel one would have if one were to use these tanks in a C-170 . This weight would ...

Cargo tie-down

They want $120 for two of those fancy jobs at http://www.jacobsonmachine.com . If red is not your color you can get these purple ones which attach to Cessna seat tracks for "only" $85 a piece from http://www.cargosystems.com . http://www.cargosystems.com/55020x.jpg Cargo rings which attach...

Battery Power

That's not exactly apples to apples, tho'. Homebuilts don't meet a LOT of requirements of certificated aircraft. They can use lawn-tractor batteries from Pep Boys! (of course I hear there's a 170 in California that does as well.) Years ago I annualled a J-3 that had a field approval for a motorcycl...

Sealed Batteries

In a somewhat dated article at http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles/battery.pdf Bob Nuckolls sings the praises of the RG battery, "I recommend switching to an RG battery at the next opportunity; there's nothing to maintain on this truly sealed battery, just keep an eye on charging voltage. Conv...

If you want it straight from the horse's (some have suggested another equine) mouth, you can listen to Bill O'Brien for a price on http://www.amtonline . (It's a site where IA's can go to maintain currency instead of attending a maintenance seminar). Bill is the FAA National Resource Specialist, He ...

Instrument panel shock mounts

How is it that you have 10 shock mounts? Both the early and later style panels only call for 6 on the standard panels (fig. 40-3 and 43-2)? I ordered my shock mounts from Aircraft Spruce--they appear to be identical to the original. I have the early style 170B panel. I was curious why somebody would...

Firewall

On http://www.cessnaparts.com the firewall sheet, p/n 0513101-3, is $419.90. I looked into making my own firewall but decided that by the time I bought the tooling to make the dimpled recesses it would be cheaper and easier to just buy one. I bought a stainless one from Del-Air for $383.96. This inc...
