Re: B model cowling repair

Thanks for all the great input. We scrapped the carbon fiber and went to straight fiberglass for the layup. I popped the clamps off this morning and everything looks great. I'm hopeful this repair will add some structural integrity and longevity to the cowling. Some minor bodywork and a little paint...

Re: B model cowling repair

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. We’ve worked extensively with composite materials, but haven’t done much work with aluminum. The corrosion issues are something we will address.

B model cowling repair

Our “new” 1955 170B has some typical cracks on the forward part of the upper cowling. Before risking further damage, we decided to undertake a repair that we hope will be a permanent solution to the problem. We’ve built a doubler using a 2-bid carbon fiber layup and plan on attaching it to the cowli...

Re: engine cowling baffles

Well, I had a tube of RTV and some spare time, so I went ahead and sealed the valve covers. #2 and 4 show some signs of excessive heat, and operating in FL has me concerned about cooling.

Re: engine cowling baffles

Thanks Miles. I’ll fly it as-is and reevaluate down the road if necessary.

Re: engine cowling baffles

Can anyone with a 170B speak to the use of RTV between the valve covers and the engine baffles? I’m replacing all the baffles in my airplane with the Airforms kit. The baffles I removed had the RTV, but most of the pictures I have found on this site do not have the RTV. And thank you to Miles for po...

Re: Cowl Rub Strip Material

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to see that's the solution. It will save me the cost of buying a 9-foot section of the other stuff!

Cowl Rub Strip Material

The rub strip material attached to my cowling that goes around the air filter is starting to disintegrate. I couldn't find the Cessna part, but I did find this: http://www.brownaircraft.com/category-s/73.htm The Cessna part in the IPC looks to be a similar part number to the rub strip used on all th...

Re: SK210-174B

FYI, a recent search shows the SK210-174B kit on sale for the low low price of $1332, down from a normal price of $1480 8O

I’m looking at the repair cost for my current unit and will report back with what I hope is a more reasonable number.

Re: Safety Inertia Reel on Seats

Charlie, I just discovered that my locking reel is damaged. Was yours an AMSAFE? Where did you send it for repair? I called AMSAFE directly and they said they would be happy to repair the part but only if it was sent through Cessna. Any insight into the process you used to get yours repaired would b...
