You're wanting to fill the gap with the shim, so that you don't induce stress in the structure when you tighten the bolts.
The other end of both the horizontal stabilizer and the vertical fin are what sets the location of these subassemblies in the fore-and-aft direction.

Yes, the Ragwing uses entirely different tanks and caps.

Re: Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
I would take the easy way out and duplicate the original pitot tube. I have not needed (or wanted) a heated tube yet in my '48. As stated earlier, there is an access opening already there in the leading edge skin to get to the internal connection. It may not have been cut out since the last recover ...

Vortex generators!
My '48 (with vortex generators) would be able to fly in ground effect
at 60mph indicated.

Re: B model cowling repair
I would guess that there is a high probability that Cessna was able to form 2024-O, and then heat treat to T3. It would not surprise me at all if the original nose bowls are 2024T3. The Univair PMA nose bowls sure seem to be a lot softer (at least the one I examined a few years back). But I am just ...

Re: 1948 C-170 muffler / exhaust cracks
My mechanic cut a wedge shaped sliver out of the pipe to allow the necessary slight bend, and welded the pipe back together. It wasn't a big task.

Re: 1948 C-170 muffler / exhaust cracks
On my Ragwing, the outlet pipe on one side had to be adjusted to line up with the cowling exit opening. Otherwise it fit fine. I forget which side needed the adjustment.

Not so sure, Bruce.Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:That IS NOT a crack in the muffler. It is a crack in the air heat baffle that surrounds the muffler to create hot air for carb heat and cabin heat.
Looks to me like the outside half of the heat baffle is removed, and we are looking at the muffler.

Re: Annual question - ragwing fuel pump
I believe that is not just a gasket, it is the pump diaphragm. Unfortunately, I do not believe that it is available as a separate part for purchase. You may be stuck purchasing a new or overhauled pump (AF40585). The only good news is that Tempest does supply new and overhauled pumps, as Continental...

Folks, I tried to answer Doug States question. I have no intention of self promotion and sorry if it sounded that way. Anyone wishing to know more information can contact me. I will be removing the post since George Horn stated other members complained that I was self promoting via personal message...

Re: Brake Master Cylinder
Well, your '48 must be different than my '48! The master cylinders on mine are directly behind the left side set of rudder/brake pedals. The right side set of rudder/brake pedals are connected to the left side set of rudder/brake pedals by the torque tubes that you speak of. You're not looking behin...

Re: New 170A owner with muffler question
First, from my first hand knowledge ( I have pancakes and had Hanlon Wilson), Hanlon Wilson mufflers do not make more heat that the pancake mufflers. In fact, if there is a difference, the pancakes make more. You will not see a difference on your A model. Very well could be true for the A model. Bu...

Re: Landing gear, unilateral, right, and left
Gary:
I think that you are looking at an assembly, not just the spring.
In the IPC's, scroll on down to Item 27-12, which is the spring (and no left or right designation).
For some reason, in the 170A IPC, they also included serial number range for 1948 straight 170.

Re: Leaking primer
I do not have one of these primers in front of me to examine.
But, I wonder if the "hole in the back of the barrel" is open because some check valve parts have fallen out of that hole.
