Rudder Bearings

Post by simon »

Hi guys, we were working on the tailwheel and decided to pull the rudder for better access. Just like everything else, it opened a can of worms. To make a long story short, does anybody have a source for the bearings. The parts manual calls them SIK-5. I believe they were made by Fafnir. Also, anybody have any experience changing them. It looks like the Hinge/carrier has been peened over to lock them in. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I can't find the lower hinge bolt that goes through the bellcrank called out anywhere in the parts manual. Anybody know what it is supposed to be? As always, thanks for the help.

call a bearing supply place, they can cross the bearing part number for you, if your friendly Cessna dealer doesn't have it.

to change the bearing, use a socket of the exact size or just smaller than the outside diameter (OD) of the bearing, and a larger one that the small socket will fit into. use a C-clamp and push the bearing through using the small socket as the pusher and the big one as the catcher.

use a clamp to push the new bearing in, and a center punch works well to peen it in for safety.

The bearing is a Fafnir SIK-5, still available from Cessna and some others, for outrageous prices. I have one NOS, complete with the NOS bearing support if you run into difficulty. I'd want a fair price for it, tho'.

I'll keep that in mind, I think I may have a line on some bearings, still waiting to hear back on that.

Thanks

Simon,

Did you have any luck finding your bearings? I'm in the same boat as you were and need two bearings.

I would suspect that any bearing house could readily replace that bearing at a reasonable price. Cessnas mark-up is ridiculous.
